Clyde Tunnel, Glasgow

Pro Clad Roofing was contracted by Glasgow City Council to undertake a critical infrastructure project within the Clyde Tunnel, one of the busiest road tunnels in Scotland.

Spanning approximately 762 meters (2,500 feet) in length, the Clyde Tunnel consists of two parallel tunnels, known as bores, which serve as vital transport links for thousands of vehicles every day. We were contracted to meticulous remove the existing single-skin aluminium cassette panels in the roof of each bore and replace them with the installation of modern, fire-rated composite panels to enhance safety and durability.

Project Challenges

Given the essential nature of the Clyde Tunnel, the project presented unique challenges. To minimise disruption to the road network, the cladding work could only be performed during the night. This required precise planning and execution to ensure that scheduled work could be completed safely and to an agreed schedule. Only one tunnel bore could be closed at a time, ensuring continuous traffic flow through the other bore. This necessitated a phased approach, working on one bore at a time to maintain the operational integrity of the tunnel.

The project demanded the highest safety standards, both in terms of the fire-rated composite panels installed and the safety protocols followed during the night time operations.

For four consecutive weeks, our team operated during the nightly closure of one bore. Each night, as soon as the bore was closed to traffic, our skilled team mobilised to strip out the existing aluminium panels which were carefully removed and disposed of, ensuring minimal environmental impact.

    Installation of Fire-Rated Composite Panels

The new composite panels were selected not only for their fire-resistant properties but also for their durability and ease of maintenance. These panels were fabricated to fit the tunnel’s exact specifications, ensuring a seamless installation, with our team working efficiently to install the panels within the allotted time each night.

To ensure the longevity and safety of the installation, each phase of the project was subject to rigorous quality checks. Our team adhered to all relevant industry standards and regulations, and the final installation was inspected and approved by independent safety assessors.

The Clyde Tunnel project was completed on schedule and within budget, without any disruption to daytime traffic. The new fire-rated composite panels significantly enhance the tunnel’s safety and structural integrity, providing long-term benefits to both the client and the thousands of commuters who rely on this vital transport link.
